LUKE. What is there to say about Luke.

Layton is no longer the type to rely on other people, not truly. As far as we know, he's led a largely solitary, self-sufficient existence since the time machine incident all those years ago. He makes friends and acquaintances and cares for them genuinely while never allowing them to get so close that they would have a hold on his heart in the ways Randall or Claire did.

Luke is the closest exception. Layton never asked for Luke to become his "apprentice", and I imagine he would have liked to reject Luke's request completely if Luke hadn't been so very sure that it was what he wanted. In the years since Misthallery, Layton has watched Luke grow from a sullen, suspicious, and angry 10-year-old to an enthusiastic and earnest 14-year-old, and he can't help but feel proud of Luke as if he were the son he never had.

But Luke is not his son and he has no illusions about that. Putting a single word to their relationship can be difficult. Layton labels the two of them as close friends and tries to keep their relationship on equal footing, but in the end he is also a mentor, protector, and role model. He just can't be Luke's father. There are times when he'd like Luke to appreciate Clark a little more... but, as with many things, Layton doesn't feel it's his place to make a comment.

Layton sometimes feels like his time with Luke is borrowed, given his canon point, and is resigned to the knowledge that one of them will disappear from Luceti someday. It's a bit like the harbor scene, part 2. It can be a little hard seeing Luke grow and knowing that this will be what he's missing out on back home, but he doesn't dwell on it and chooses to see the fortune in their current situation for what it is.

Luceti-specific tidbits: Layton is pleased to see that Luke has been able to manage without him, and that he seems to be less reliant on Layton himself. Coming into his own and all. Regardless, Layton keeps an eye out for him when he can and is always interested in the developments of his life.
