Username Meaning Meme

We all see each others usernames whenever we get tags or scroll through our friends lists, but not all of us know what they all mean - especially with our move to Dreamwidth, and the large amount of username changes that came with that. That's what this meme is for!

It's pretty simple - all you have to do is explain the meaning of your character's username, and ... that's it, really! Feel free to get as in-depth about the whole thing as you want, there really isn't much to this one.

So ... yes! Let's see some explanations, guys!

Crisis Rain is the name of Raven's second mystic arte in the game (think of it like a finishing move for those unfamiliar with the term). There's a specific reason why I chose it over other usernames I had lined up, and that was because it's exclusive to the PS3 version of the game. Because the Raven I play comes from this version and not the 360 one I wanted to make it pretty clear, and there's no matter way that shoving it in the username. I actually had him lined up under the username "oldman" for DW, but I felt a little homesick with the big change (since this my third year here now @_@).

Alvin | untrustworthy
In a nut shell, right from the start of the game and then all the way through, he is blatantly marked as suspicious. But there's a bit of a catch with this username for those who have played the game so let's shove it in slightly-grey-but-almost-white text.

"Alvin doesn't actually know how to trust. He was raised as a spy since he was a little kid and then by the point I've taken him from, he's realized that he can't trust people. It's lead him down a path he'd like to change, he's just not sure how to do it. So the username is more of a double entendre than anything, because he finds you just as untrustworthy as you'd find him."

Oh, that second bit of Alvin's username is very clever! I didn't think of it that way.

A lot of people already know a lot about Beast's canon, but if you're less familiar with the songs (or didn't hear much adult contemporary/pop music in the 90's), you probably don't know what his username means.

Basically, it's a play on the first few lines from the title track "Beauty and the Beast" ("Tale as old as time"), with the fact that he... well, has a tail.

It took me a while to come up with it, since I wanted something clever and not too lazy-sounding - okay, truth be told, I didn't come up with it, Obi-Wan's mun did - but I still decided on it. At one point I was pondering calling him "not_shreeky" in a ridiculous Care Bears reference (Shreeky's partner-in-crime was "Beastly"). XD

IT'S SUPER OBVIOUS BUT- Senri remembers things by sticking flowers in his book. His username on LJ was a little less obvious, Amurui is the name of the (man-eating) crazy bear spirit that is a part of his anima he has to suppress.

byakkoyagirl (Paprika) - Based off the movie's opening theme which plays instrumentally in the beginning as she skips around the city.

arturian (Saber) - A play of "Arthurian", but because her name is Arturia it becomes "Arturian" with spoilers for Fate/Stay Night under the black.

rabuends (Homura Akemi) - I asked Jelle at 5am to help me think of a new username since my old one was taken by someone else. That conversation on Homura's profile page.

Ginia's last name is Solana, which means "sunny side" of a mountain or valley.

If you take her whole name, it plays off of "aubergine" (eggplant). Solanaceae is the family of plants that includes nightshades (Belladonna) and eggplants/tomatoes/potatoes (Solanum) alike. (This family also includes peppers, tobacco, and petunias. THE MORE YOU KNOW.)

Tying this all back into her username? She's a nightshade in the sun or she's a dark spot on the sunny side of a mountain/valley. She's a sunny, chipper individual that's got some really screwed up parts.

(Previous usernames for her have been "Auberginia", "silentbartender", "Solanacaea", and "dudewheresmybar". Alice has "violentbrtender" and "sunlitshade".)

markofthewise - Unchanged from LJ. In "Bato of the Water Tribe", Sokka undergoes his rite of passage for becoming a man by taking a boat out iceberg dodging (or in this case, sharp jagged rocks). Thanks to his ability to guide his friends through the passage, he is given the 'Mark of the Wise' for his wisdom in leadership. His dad received the same one when he turned fourteen.

bamfing - When Kurt teleports, the sound is a 'bamf', so a short hand for teleporting is that he is 'bamfing'.

avaricious - Avarice is greed, a trait that is shown in Ling. Unlike the character Greed, who usually portrays the negative sides of greed, Ling encompasses the positive sides. He wants to protect the Yao Clan, Xing, his friends, and do it with few sacrifices. He wants to keep everything that is important to him, no matter the cost to himself.

arturius - A little language origin sort of thing. One of them is 'arturius' which may be linked to the Roman family name of 'Artorios' but that's all getting a bit complicated. Either way, it's a variation of his name. It's only coincidentally similar to Saber's, though!

trueknight - Yuri was a knight in his canon, but quit after three months of it, which was why I had him as "once_knighted" while on LJ. Here it's trueknight, one of Yuri's costume titles in canon, which he gains after completing what is probably one of the game's most difficult side quests (completing all Secret Missions in a single playthrough). Estelle also mentions at the end of this side quest that she considers Yuri to be a "true knight", as well.

... but I mostly chose it because I love the paladin outfit he gets for it. Ignoring the Prince attachment he has in that pic there, anyway, but that's cool too.

germanicus - Not really the most creative name I've ever come up with for a character, but here, have some Fate/EXTRA spoilers. "Germanicus" comes from the last of the many names that make up Saber's true name, that being Nero Claudius Augustus Caesar Germanicus.

cluster - Nothing too special. The region Tyria comes from is known as Sol Cluster, so I just ... took the name from there :|b !

Edward is pretty self-explanatory: automailed is what he is now, with the two automail limbs. And still matches with Al, kyaa kyaa~

Asch is dissonates because of an effect of being replicated, "dissonance", which means that the particles holding an original's body together are starting to leave them, causing them to feel weak/faint or infrequent pains similar to heart attacks. Asch experiences this often in canon, so it's kind of a character trait.

Zack is wingenvy because in Crisis Core EVERYONE GETS WINGS EXCEPT HIM. It's a bitch. He's quoted as going "those wings... I want them too." He's got wing envy. Simple enough.

Suki is kyoshi because she's from Kyoshi Island and leads the Kyoshi Warriors. SO COMPLEX EH.

Mikage is fyulong because he was reincarnated as a baby fyulong dragon at his current canon point. |Db

alphonse elric - ~disembodied because after the transmutation of their mother, alphonse loses his body.

aoto - ~steeplejack. prior to the adventure, aoto was a steeplejack in training.

shuri oak - ~militia. "a body of citizens enrolled in military services". shuri was recruited for the army because of family heritage and zaiphon, not because he's a skilled fighter or probably any real want to become a solider. he's just doing what he's told.

shizuo heiwajima - ~inadvertently. because everything shizuo has ever done in his life has been an inadvertent consequence of his strength.

Julian (who is burns_so_brightly) first, since his is easy. It's from a quote from Guy. "He frightens me because he burns so brightly. Bright, beautiful flames burn out."

Archie (this account) got this username from something he says at the end of the sixth movie, lying on his deathbed. He has just given up his good name to give Horatio a second chance at life. Horatio is understandably struggling with this.

"Poor Horatio. So quick to give. So slow to accept even the simplest gift. You've done the same for me and others a thousand times."

"But never at such a dear cost," Horatio says in a choked voice.

"Please," whispers Archie. "Just take what I have to offer. Just...take it and say goodbye."

So. Yeah. There are a few layers in that. He himself is the simplest gift he can give, and so is his name.

Haruhi Suzumiya (godbent) [SAME AS HER LJ USERNAME] -> Double Meaning. Both for the fact that in Luceti world she is a "genderbent" Haruki (who was god_is_a_dude on Lj so I initially wanted god_is_a_chick but it was taken) but also to reflect her obtuse personality. Particularly in the later canon how "bent" Haruhi is is a real, well. Problem. Particularly given that she's "God."

Masaomi Kida (generalflirt [SAME AS HIS LJ USERNAME] -> (Vague) Double Meaning. Apart, he's the "General" of the Yellow Scarves gang (which is a spoiler but he's pretty blatant with these things days so...) and he is, of course, an insatiable flirt. Combined though, it's "general flirt" as in he's a general flirt all things considered.

Melaka Fray (makeitquick) -> She was neoslaying on Lj, which was to match Buffy's username (slaying) there. [Sidebar: Shikki made Harth's outdoing, to match the Angel we had at the time (undoing)] However, in the move Aly changed Buffy's username, and I felt neoslaying without the connection was a relatively poor username to keep. So I changed it to "Make It Quick" - which is a direct reference to this moment which will forever haunt her nightmares.

Rin Okumura (rashness) -> He was flameson on Lj. That was meant to be Flame Son (vaguely to match a Yukio I had lined up originally we meant to do some sort of matching username thing) but it kept being read as "flames on" and while I liked the username, people kept telling me it was weak. So when Batty changed Shiemi's on DW to shamelessness and offered for me to match, I went with a fitting thing.

folklorist - Helios is a folklorist. Which going off of dictionary.com is the study of folkores/mythologies/etc.

deceives - Pretty easy to figure out. HE'S STARSCREAM! He's a deceiving, scheming, jerk.

necromancing - Silth is a necromancer. He raises the dead and speaks to spirits/acts like a vessel for them at times. Yup.

This should be painfully obvious to anyone who has played her canon. She is the Fourteenth - member fourteen of Organization XIII. This username was actually donated to me by a good friend - originally, her DW username was going to be affronter, which has an only slightly more interesting story behind it. At one point during the game, she says of herself, "I'm the real affront." Thus, affronter. Because she is sad and her life is sad.

I miss her old name, poppetry, a lot. It's been taken here on DW for a long time. :< That, of course, was a play on puppetry and poppet - poppet being the nickname donated to her in canon by Xigbar, which itself is an older spelling of puppet, and means a small child or doll. She's referred to as a puppet numerous times throughout the game - she even calls herself that ("But I'm nothing more than a puppet--something that somebody created.") - and much to her dismay, she is often led along like a puppet on strings by the Organization's higher-ranked members (plus Saix, that jerk).

jinchuuriki for Naruto.

Jinchuuriki (which means "power of human sacrifice") is the name of the hosts of the nine tailed beasts in Naruto's world, and Naruto just so happens to be the jinchuuriki of the Nine-Tailed Fox, which is supposed to be the strongest of the beasts.

rageface for Ragna.

Well, Ragna is pretty easy to anger. Actually, it's far easier to piss Ragna off more than anything else, and most of the time he walks around with that kind of attitude floating around him. So, he gets all full of rage! On his face! And then (insert emotion here)face is kind of thing too.

roboredom for Robo-Ky.

Kind of a play on words. He's a robot whose motive for what he does (all those stupid things) is boredom. He also has the term "ennui" etched on his belt, which is French for boredom (fun fact: he is a robot based off of Ky Kiske, who is actually French). Combining robot and boredom ended up sounding a lot better than I thought, and thus roboredom was born.

Mine are all pretty straightforward, but here goes.

dragoneer for Hiccup is a play on dragons and engineering/pioneering. Hiccup was the first viking to ride a dragon. And he also makes cool stuff, related to dragons. So. Yeah. He's a dragoneer!

alloys for Tony has DUAL MEANING because he, you know, alloys metal for his work--in particular his Iron Man suit, which is made from an alloy of gold and titanium. The more you know! But it's also a bit deeper since he made his suit stronger by alloying the two metals, and that's sort of reflective of himself. Cheesy. But there you go.

affability for Hughes because he's, well, affable. To the umpteenth degree. And that's about all there is to it.

And here is where we realize that Stark is really lame..

redjacketthief because of obvious reasons. Lupin wears a red jacket, and is a thief. Also for part of his canon point--he's worn a green jacket and a pink jacket at alternate times, but the red is the most well known. That was the longest series, and is his most common color in the specials, though he has switched back to green a few times.

coolportaljumper for Yugo because...oddly, I decided on this before I even considered voice testing him. He jumps through his portals almost literally, and one of his favorite words to say is 'cool.' Yes, in a French cartoon. Go fig.

vulcanblazer (Adell): Adell's ultimate unique attack from Disgaea 2 is called "Vulcan Blaze." "Vulcanblaze" was taken on LJ when I went to make his journal, so I added the "R" to make it sound like he was the user of that attack. Pretty straightforward. On DW, Vulcanblaze was not taken when I went for it, but I kept the old name for consistency.

itdoesntmatter (Sonic): The title of Sonic's theme from the Sonic Adventure series. (Original SA1 version, SA2 rearrangement.) Not especially creative, but it's one of the few themes from Sonic games that gets carried over for more than one game. The SA1 version tends to be the one that gets referenced the most, though most people I've talked to prefer the SA2 one.

purestpurifier (Mega Man): Legends 2 is well past the Statute of Limitations on spoilers as it was a PS1 era game. SO INCOMING TEXT WALL.

Probably the only actually creative one I have, "Purest Purifier" refers to Mega Man's true heritage. Mega Man is not human, nor is he exactly what is called a Carbon. He's pretty much the ultimate version of a biological artificial life form (capable of growth, aging, and even reproduction, oddly enough), and he was created on a Space Station called Elysium, by the last surviving "true" human, known as The Master.

Mega Man's job was to be a "Purifier Unit", or rather, someone who was charged with destroying aberrant artificial creations that went rogue and posed a danger to Elysium. However, he was also the Master's favorite creation, and essentially became his friend and confidant.

As all of the artificial life on Elysium was meant to serve, and more importantly, protect the Master, many of the sentient creations sought to keep the Master sequestered away on Elysium and off of Terra (Earth) where the artificial life forms known as Carbons (essentially, something very similar to Mega Man, but less powerful and advanced) lived. The Master, on the other hand, wished to leave the paradise of Elysium for Terra, as it was a more real place, where people knew true happiness because they also knew suffering, something the Master did not. As well, being on Terra would likely lead to the Master's death, as he was centuries old by that point.

Mega Man was the only one willing to listen to the Master's wish, and in a sense, made him the "purest" of all of the creations there, in that he served the Master's wishes, of his own free will, even though it meant the death of his creator.

...All of this is lost on Mega Man, however, as a battle with one of the Mother Units as a result of his decision effectively wiped his memory and left him placed on Terra where he would become the Mega Man in Luceti. ...He still has yet to recover those memories.

Clearly I like spoilery usernames!

cherishedmiracle - Over on LJ, Nagisa's username was repeatsyearly, since one of her illnesses lasted six months and forced her to repeat a year in high school. And then it happened again. But then I changed it mainly because I wanted to match with Sei's Tomoya username hee;; So! This one basically comes from the fact that Nagisa died after giving birth to her baby with Tomoya, Ushio, who ended up dying a few years later as well. So Tomoya made a wish with some light orb things he got from helping people out throughout the series, which then created an alternate timeline that included Nagisa surviving labor and Ushio not contracting her illness. This explains it well, I guess. (spoilers there derpderp) Also I think Star came up with this username. Or Henry. I forget.

moehealer - Yellow is moe. And she heals things. That's all. Yep. Kyo came up with it.

ctrlaltdemons - Just a play on words or something, I guess! Like ctrl+alt delete but just.. demons. yeah. Buuut it can also refer to
how Atsuro wanted to control all of the demons in the Lockdown, rather than get rid of them all like Gin wanted to do. He figured that it'd be a waste to eliminate them all when they can actually reap many benefits.

hasnobeats -
Otonashi doesn't have a heart (in the literal sense). Right before he died, he circled every single organ on this organ donator card thing and yeah. His heart coincidentally ended up being donated to Kanade, hence why Jelle's Kanade username is "hashisbeats". (that reminds me; I've been meaning to ask a mod whether or not he would have his heart here in Luceti.. probably, I guess. :'|a)

I took this from the opening line of Yuki Kajiura's "A Stray Child." The song itself isn't really all that fitting for her, but for someone afflicted with magical amnesia who can't remember her purpose? She definitely is lost in her way.

Fenimore's username, blessingone, comes from the fact that someone had already claimed her previous username, xelhes, one year before I started looking into Dreamwidth usernames.

Her people give everyone what is known as a "true name" to represent the bearer's true nature. Fenimore's true name is xelhes, or "blessing," and, because of this, she occasionally tries to give her blessing to people, like "may the sea guide you" or "you must find your happiness." It's unknown if these blessings actually do anything or if it's just something Fenimore misguidedly believes due to her true name and they do no more than anyone else's well-wishes, though I tend towards the latter interpretation.

So pretty much every alternate username for Fenimore involves blessing in some form because it is easy and I am not especially creative. blessingone was used previously on Livejournal for the You Are What You Love event in which she took on the appearance of her best friend, Shirley, who had the username prayingone based on her true name, fennes or "one who prays." When I was searching for usernames for Dreamwidth, I harkened back to it and it eventually rose to the top of my list.

(Her original username was idkmybffmerines, based on the by-then two year old meme, as most of her involvement in the plot revolves around her friendship with the Merines, Shirley. Not recalling others using it for usernames, I thought it would be original and funny. Then, upon seeing it used elsewhere, I realized that it was pretty obvious. Oh well. Eventually I changed it when Griff pointed out xelhes was open and I decided that would be cool.)

His username comes from the fact that Kim Philby often calls him a mad bastard. Fairly simple!

Her username comes from her absolute loathing of corsets. She wears them, but ever since one was painful and nearly killed her (by making it so difficult to breathe, she passed out and fell off the ramparts and only just missed the rocks below)... she'd rather not. Given her choices, anyway.

"You like pain? Try wearing a corset!"

Little Mac - thelittlemacthatcould A none-too-subtle play on 'the little engine that could', reflecting Mac's determination and optimism.

Isaac - relictusdeus "Forsook God." In CastleVania canon, Dracula, whom Isaac serves, is pretty much opposite to God; Isaac also 'defies' Him in that he is capable of creating demonic life through the most forbidden of dark arts. Headcanonically, he feels as though God forsook him, because others were made in His image while he was born a monster. Isaac is also a homosexual and he's aware that it's regarded in his time as a grave sin.

Ishikawa Goemon - deathbeforedishonor Based on episode 112 of red jacket, where Goemon claims he would rather die than betray his enemies. He isn't the sort to beg for mercy in difficult situations. Being a latter day samurai, this seemed fitting of his stoicism and the value he places in honour.

falenandawn Pretty self explanatory and chosen for a number of reasons: One, he bears the Dawn Rune during the course of the game, which is one of the three Runes of Falena and one of the Magical Plot Devices of choice for the game.

Two, his original canon point was the morning before they finally set out to retake Sol-Falena. The 'final stretch' if you will, of the storyline, after the tradtional night before the final battle thing that tends to happen in Suikoden.

It could also apply to his current canon point, given his country, Falena, is heading towards a new future. A new dawn, of sorts.
