It's complicated. Ling is only just starting to realize that maybe his feelings for Ran Fan are more than just the familial ones he's always had. Because she's always been among the most important people in his life. She's more than just a bodyguard and he's tried to encourage her to be more than that. To be the friend he's always had since childhood.

But now that he realizes that she feels more than that, he feels like he needs to back off. Because even if he does realize how important she is to him and what he feels for her, he knows it can't be. And unlike other girls in Luceti where he might pretend to have an interest in them, it would be cruel to entertain any kind of feelings with her. So. He's going to be the one that keeps it from going any further. It's a sacrifice that comes with being the Emperor.

Kairi is someone he enjoys because she doesn't dismiss him for being weird while at the same time, he can get something of a reaction from her. He also think she's pretty, but that's just a passing fancy. Her world is pretty intriguing and her status as a princess merits looking into more. Overall, he doesn't consider her a close friend, but she is a friend. And she makes good company.

Pao-Lin is just another one of those people that Ling enjoys chatting with, for no other reason than to pass the time. There's really no particular reason why, but she does seem to remind him vaguely of people back in Xing. (I WONDER WHY.) Given the way Ling is, he doesn't really press him for details about her life and she hasn't done the same to him. So it's a comfortable, simple friendship.

Mr. Hughes seems like a nice guy and Ling recognizes a fellow troll when he sees one. But he also can tell that Hughes seems like a pretty smart guy and he's a dedicated family man. Even though Hughes may be dead, Ling can't help but look at his life and wonder would it be like to live that way.

But he really wishes Hughes would get out of his love live. 8|
