Oh man, where to start? Smoker and Lupin is like what Zenigata and Lupin would be if Lupin's pride weren't a factor. Both law dogs are firm, stolid, and generally don't care about what people say or do--and both are 'off the clock'. Smoker doesn't know the exact level of insanity that Lupin can get up to, though Smoker has gotten a taste of it over their repeated interactions. The prideful part of Lupin is uncomfortable by this...but Smoker doesn't care.

It's the fact that Smoker is like this that has helped Lupin be as open as he is, even though a part of him keeps saying that he should just take all of this up with Zenigata. He likes having a relatively unbiased third party to bounce thoughts, plans, and ideas off of, and is very grateful for the frank discourse that has resulted from this. The combination of Smoker and Fujiko being gone, along with Pops, and losing Goemon and Murasaki all within a six week span of eachother really threw Lupin for a loop, and Smoker's solidity actually was extremely helpful in getting his brain back onto a steady track. He wouldn't go to Jigen with that kind of problem--pride. He wouldn't talk to Pops about it--pride. He wouldn't talk to Fujiko about it--for pride and fear of worrying her.

Fujiko is scary when she's worried.

The entire thing with Grell threw him for a loop, but everything about Grell throws him. The old fashioned part of his mind keeps wondering how a person can really live like she does, the gentleman part of him keeps his tongue still, and the rational part figures that Grell has to be decent people if Smoker is her lover. Even he knows that Smoker doesn't suffer idiots lightly, and even with his observations of her latent predatory nature he figures that she has it underwraps or channeled properly.

He's even grateful that the two of them are considering the option of the proposed treasure hunting game. It shows a malleability in Smoker, and it's very respectable.

The recent Shift taught him also what it means to be in a field of work similar to Smoker's. To have people around you, to have even a small command, to have to suffer idiots and futility...to live a somewhat orderly existance, even while being a poor example of an officer that ducked promotions and generally swore to do as little as he could manage. It was a taste of the 'other side', as their conversation would put it. He doesn't regret it, and even has new respect for Smoker because of it.

...if it came to it, he would likely try to assist Smoker as best as he could if a crisis ever happened. Odds are that he wouldn't say anything about it, just slip into position and make himself useful--but, the fact that he even feels this way is something for a man that doesn't get on well with rules and is generally Chaotic Neutral verging on Chaotic Good.
