Ah, Fujiko~ Is there a good way to describe their relationship as anything other than complicated? She is strong, smart, cagey, thrilling, challenging--but, all of her negative traits such as the paranoia and even masochistic tendencies on her part is what causes that. He recognizes this. He also recognizes that she is the only woman who can ever give him a satisfactory challenge and match him on every level and more.

The fact that she's even here in Luceti at all is a potent factor for him. Without her, he'd likely be more manicky and more inclined to find a girl who can warm his bed...mostly to fill a void. With her around, however, he needs to be as solid as he can manage, while at the same time she is part of the basis of why he is doing anything that he does.

His short term plan of Fountain-Theft is for her sake. His long term plan of eventual escape is for her sake. The fact that she's been here for so long, the fact that she was starting to lose hope of escape by the time that he arrived, is unforgivable for him. His eagerness to get her and all of his friends out is why he's been so cagey about talking to people, so hesiatant about trusting, so frustrated about his lack of progress, and even dangerously reckless.

This Shift, then, has bothered him in more ways than one. He really and truely is crazy about Fujiko, despite his activities. Sex does not equal love for him, as it's just a different method of play--thus, this thing with Adele over the Event has him bothered...because regardless of the origin of his actions and feelings, that counted as cheating for him. Even more of a bother is that he doesn't regret it, and that he's even come to trust two very specific individuals because of it.

Just as Fujiko and her mentalities are dysfunctional, Lupin is just as bad. He recognizes that Fujiko will want to kill him, he recognizes that this means that they're likely to begin their one-two step dance again, but he doesn't care and even looks forward to it.

Above and beyond, he loves her because she is the manifestation of everything dangerous about his career and women in general. He loves her for it, but even with this can't quite imagine settling down just yet. There's plenty more games for them to play, and they're still young despite whatever records that still exist say. It's the thrill of it. He knows it's unhealthy...

Then again, what fun things in life aren't?
