Keimi is ADORABLE~

...okay, there's more to it than that. Aside from Nami on occassion, Lupin really does pay absolutely no attention to anything that the Strawhats do (sorry Luffy), so the revelation of there being a mermaid in Luceti, mentioned by Smoker himself, was one helluva surprise. There is a major, ongoing mermaid theme within the franchise, to the point that the most recent TV Special is called Eternal Mermaid--it's a thing that just keeps on popping up~

However, though the recent special had several flaws, the writers used it as an excuse to flesh out the ongoing rivalry that Lupin has with his late Grandfather, the man who is the Grandaddy of the Gentleman Thief tradition everywhere. Included in this is a heavy infatuation on the Grandfather's part with the titular mermaid, who then went and mistook Lupin for his Grandfather in the modern setting.

His Grandfather loved a mermaid, but couldn't save her. Lupin managed to save her. One down. But, really, it's Lupin's pride that's forever on the line with this. He will never be able to truely best his Grandfather on account of the man being dead--he needs to find other things.

Thus, Lupin's fanboying is not without reason. When mermaids are frequently depicted in in the artworks that he steals, when the one rival that he'll never be able to defeat had an unrequited love with a mermaid that he couldn't save, it's pretty natural that Lupin's majorly pinged by Keimi. Unfortunately, for all of the wrong reasons--she is a possible way for him to best his Grandfather at something, if only on a little way.

That said, Lupin is also interested in Keimi as a person. Anyone who Smoker sees as a daughter has got to be special in some way, and she is absolutely adorable. Additionally, once Lupin learns who the other tailor in Luceti is, the one that doesn't run All Passions, you can bet on which one he's going to run to so he can place his order.

Seeing that it's his jacket on the line, he'd even find a way to repay Keimi somehow. The jacket is special, and holds a lot of sentimental value for him. Seeing as Smoker adores her, he would consider that as even more of a blessing.
