At a glance, Gold is a lot like some of Shikamaru's other friends: a loud, immature, and reckless person. Having worked with him on the drafts once or twice, he's since seen there's more to him than that. Gold's a good guy to work with, and his relationship with his Pokemon vaguely reminds him of how people in his own world fight with summons. That was his first point in his favor, as Shikamaru strongly values teamwork.

When Masaomi started calling his 'Scarves' meetings, Gold was the only one invited besides Shikamaru himself. He proved to have a decent moral compass, asking a lot of good question while still backing their friend. That Masaomi made him his comrade means that he has automatic bro status with Shikamaru too. But with those qualities? That's not a bad thing.

All the same, he wants to get to know him better himself as well. Maybe over cards. Gold has a mean lucky streak that he wouldn't mind putting to the test again.
