She's also been nothing but sweet around him, which is a breath of fresh air compared to the bossy women he's used to having in his life, and she has this childlike curiosity that's hard not to be taken in by. It's the sort of trait that's just troublesome enough to make her interesting without driving him nuts.
So all in all? That he doesn't feel that way about her since the experiment ended confuses him. Still, Shikamaru enjoyed their time and was even more grateful that afterwards she felt the same and that there were no awkward hang-ups. The way she handled it earned both his gratitude and respect.
While the romantic feelings are gone, he wouldn't mind to get to know her better as a friend. He'll even admit that he might have a soft spot for her - he finds her very sweet and wishes her nothing but the best.

The one time he did seek him out was over something more serious. Ace's question about whether or not blood matters lead to a discussion that revealed some deeper intricacies to his background, including that he might have even died. Shikamaru's not sure if his advice had any impact, but he hopes that Ace will come to better terms with what's bothering him. He seems to have good friends who can help him with that.
All and all, Ace is a really likable guy for a pirate, with both his appreciation and sympathy. He also makes a mean grilled mackerel, which to be fair probably contributes to about 40% of Shikamaru's opinion of him. At least it's in a positive direction.

As a result, Frey is the kind of guy that Shikamaru knows he can trust to have his back in a combat situation. He admires his leadership skills and his levelheadedness for sure, and the general sense of duty he picks up on outside of those situations. It's nice to know more people who think with their head than about bashing heads.
Due to how they usually run into one another, Shikamaru's more fond of him than some of the people he's worked with. He considers him a friend, albeit one he can admit he doesn't know very well.

Kotomi is... very odd. Quirky. This quality is something Shikamaru can immediately pings him as being troublesome, stemming from her forward attitude and clumsy social skills to her outlook on her own habits and abilities.
It's not enough to avoid her, however. Despite it all, he finds her interesting. Book smart and well-intentioned, just with a tendency to take things too literal.
She's also probably the only person in Luceti Shikamaru will address with an honorific, when he remembers to. Only because it seems t be the only way she'll hear him, but it's an impressive feat still.

She was by no means defenseless going in there, but her combat skills weren't as well-suited for the situation. Healing abilities or not, Shikamaru wasn't sure at first why she would have wanted to go along. It made more sense the further into the mission they got, from the way Mia did everything in her power to help the team with such focused effort. It's a motivation he can really appreciate.
