Naturally, his reportedly unrivaled skills in engineering made him the best choice to work with over his information about the droids. Of course.
Their business discussions were rocky at first; often Shikamaru felt excluded, and there's just something about Tony's personality that manages to bring out his own inner bastard.
Gradually, things started to change the more that went on, however. Their snarkfests became entertaining now and then, and their work impressions slowly improved. That Tony kept on the project was a plus, and that he did gave Shikamaru the chance to see his bragging really was deserved. In turn, he finally started seeing some acknowledgement for his own contributions.
The real game-changer, however, came when the both of them were assigned to the mission to the Third Floor. Shikamaru was expecting more complications than he got out of Tony, indicating there was more respect there than he thought he had. He was also the one to watch his back on their way out of the building when Shikamaru was shot, and the concern was twice as surprising. He'd be lying if he said he didn't owe him for that too.
The man's still a jerk, and an annoying one at that. But Shikamaru doesn't mind admitting he's a good guy now, somewhere in there. He may eventually do the impossible and change his view on superheroes too, despite his unhealthy obsession with cookies.
